What is it?

Professionalism is presenting yourself in a manner that shows others around you that you are:

• In control of yourself (emotions)
• Using sound, mature judgment and decisions
• Using the skills that are unique to your vocation to the best of your ability to the benefit of those you serve.

What it is not!

• Arrogance (I’m better than you)
• My way is always right
• Looking down on or talking down to others
• Extremes in behaviors or appearance

Why Is It Important?

It puts patients at ease; it is the right thing to do; it creates a calm atmosphere in the dialysis facility; and it promotes trust in the caregivers’ judgment.

Lasting Impressions

You only get one chance to make a first impression – make it a good one! The level of professionalism the patient perceives in his/her caregivers’ affects the satisfaction he/she experiences in the care provided by the facility.
